The rainy season has come to Karatsu.
Even if you plan a weekend schedule, it might be cancelled due to bad weather.
But don't worry!
We are going to introduce you enjoyable sight-seeing spots of Karatsu in

|
Former Takatori Estate was a house of the colliery proprietor,
Takatori Koreyoshi(1850～1927).
It was built in 1905.
It was also designated as National Important Cultural Property in 1998.
The property size is about 7,590 square meters.
It is the two-story Japanese style wooden house, but it also include European
style room and decorations such as red carpet, fireplace, chandelier, etc....
There are many detail oriented ornamentation and beautification everywhere
in the property.
There is a Noh stage on the first floor.
Many beautiful paintings such as pines,
bamboos, and apricot trees(the three trees that bring good fortune), fireflies
are on sugi-board doors.
Moreover, plants and animals such as butterflies, plovers, peacocks are
carved on the ranmas, which are wooden panels used as decorative transoms
above fusumas.
You can see the animal shapes made by light through ranma.
The surrounding sceneries include Pine trees, Nishi No Hama, blue ocean,
Tori Island, Taka Island and look so beautiful.
At former Takatori Estate, volunteer guides will serve you and explain
what to check out in that property.

Kawamura Museum was built by Mr. Kawamura Haruo in 1990.
His father was Kawamura Tatsuo who was an entrepreneur from Karatsu and
had contributed to Karatsu City.
About one hundred Japanese modern style art works from Japanese representative
artists like Kishida Ryusei, Koiso Ryohei, and Kuroda Seiki are exhibited
there.
In addition, about 300 pieces of Western-style ceramic wares and glass
wares, and other 300 pieces of Eastern style ceramic wares are stored.
Especially, Mr. Kawamura loves an artist and has his art collections.
The artist's name is Aoki Shigeru who died of age 28.
In the Aoki Shigeru Exhibition Room, his 19 items such as oil paintings,
water color paintings, karuta(Japanese picture cards), post cards and so
on are exhibited.
The water-color painting called "Lamp" was painted in 1901 right
after Mr. Aoki had entered Tokyo Art School.
It is the oldest item in his collection.
Other items include "Shinwa" created in 1906, and "The sea
in the sunset" painted in 1910 etc....

| Genkai Energy Park is the theme park of human, nature, and nuclear power. |

The Genkai Energy park is the theme park of human, nature, and nuclear power.
It is located in the property of Genkai Nuclear Power Plant surrounded
by beautiful ocean and nature.
The main facility, "Genkai PR Center" consists of two pavilions,
which are called Science Palace and Kyushu Furusato Palace.
In the Science Palace, there is the Nuclear Reactor Model, which is the
size of the original; 13 meters in height and 4.5 meters in diameter.
The passage is like spiral climb.
In the middle of the passage, games, models and a big screen are set, so
you can have fun and learn about nuclear power.
On the 4th floor, observatory room is located, and you can enjoy the beautiful
views of Genkai Sea and islands.
You can even try the zoom view by remote control T.V. camera.
In the Kyushu Furusato Palace, popular festivals in Kyushu such as Hakata
Gion Yamakasa, Karatsu Kunchi, Jaodori of Nagasaki kunchi are introduced.
Also ceramics, fabrics, dyed goods, traditional craftworks are exhibited.
In the adjoining greenhouse, tropical plants and flowers are cultivated
using the heat produced by nuclear power plant.
Relax and enjoy them all the year around at Genkai Energy Park.
The market called "Dokkoisho" is located in the property and
sell fresh local produce, ocean products, and so on.
By the way, the popular souvenirs are turbos, which were harvested by local
divers.
(5～6 of them are 500yen. Those are available only on weekends.)

At "Bougain No Mori", 14 kinds of colorful bougainvilleas are cultivated.
You feel like you go into the fairy-tale-like world.

"Hydrangea Festival"
is held in June. |

Mr.Murata Hideo, who was loved
by many fans. |
|
|
|
The 22nd Hydrangea Festival is held for the month of June in Ouchi town,Karatsu
City.
The vicinity of Mikaeri falls is filled with about 50 kinds of hydrangeas.
At the same Ouchi town, the gathering to remember Murata Hideo, "Hydrangea
Mourning" is scheduled.
The singer, Murata Hideo, was born in Yoshii town, Fukuoka prefecture.
When he was three years old, he moved to Ouchi town, Karatsu city and grew
up there.
He became the very popular Enka singer of Japan and loved by many Japanese
people.
He passed away on June 13, 2002 when he was 73 years old.
They will prepare the table for memorial hydrangeas as "Hydrangea
Mourning" at Murata Hideo Memorial Hall.

The 11th Niji No Matsubara Triathlon Tournament is held in Niji No Matsubara
Pine Grove in Karatsu City.
About 300 well trained athletes from all over Japan compete each other
in the tournament.
It is the one, which doubles as a screening for "The 65th Yume Hantou
Chiba Kokutai" this year, so it is assumed to be an exciting one.
This tournament is scheduled thanks to the cooperation of many residents
and local triathlon groups.
They'd like to show the beautiful nature of Karatsu such as Niji No Matsubara
Pine Grove, Kagami Mt., and Matsuura River to the people from all over
Japan.

Hakeme Karatsu means that on brownish clay, draw a line with white decorative
clay using a brush.
Then poor Choseki glaze or wooden ash glaze on it and burn.
It is very bold, dynamic figure. |

Since February this year, 14 local hotels and inns in Karatsu has started
providing special breakfast menu "Morning Karatsu Chazuke" using
local products such as rice, tea, seafoods, and vegetables.

| ■Make the rounds of seven islands of Karatsu |

The 5th ～Matsushima(Matsu Island)～
|
Karatsu has seven islands called "Rainbow Islands" in the Genkai
sea.
Each island has its own "color" and character.
Let us introduce these islands one by one.
This time is "the Island of Rosary", Matsushima (Matsu Island). |

| It's the island of pious Christians. |
|
|
|
●The history of the island
About 150 years ago, nobody lived in this island.
One day, a man and his daughter moved into Matsu Island from Kakara Island
and started living there.
After she had grown up, the daughter got married with a Christian man from
Kuro Island in Nagasaki prefecture.
After that, the community of the island had gradually composed.
Then Matsu Island became the Christian Island. Even now, most of the island
residents are Christian.
Moreovere, this island was used for shooting a movie titled, "Oyabun
ha Iesu sama(The boss is Jesus.)", which was released in 2001.

Everyone goes there for prayer on Sunday.

●The view point of the island
Matsu Island (Matsushima) looks like gourd shape.
Its nick name is Gourd Island and loved by local people.
The sea around the island is the excellent fishing spots, and many people
visit there for fishing. |

|
|

Matsu Island hardly has flat area, and houses are standing on the steep
slopes.
If you climb up the single path, you can see the cliffs on the north side
of the island and even Iki Islands in Nagasaki prefecture. |

There is a vending machine on the island.
This is the ONLY one, so children on the island called it, "The shop."
Even though there're no restaurants or stores, maybe thanks to it, mellow
atmosphere is surrounding the island.
The main industry of the island is diving.
The major harvests are sea urchins, abalones, and turbos etc....
The scene of diving of the male divers of the island is selected for one
of The Treasures Of The Island Best Sceneries 100.
They have started cultivating olives as new industry of the island.
In the near future, olive oil might be the specialty of Matsu Island. |

The regular boat "Shin Ei" departs three round trips per day.
The fees are Adult(O/W) 450yen.
It takes about 15min. from the port of Yobuko to Matsu Island.

■Karatsu Kunchi, "The Kabuto of Takeda Shingen"
The report of fixing & repainting Hikiyama |

The 9th Hikiyama
"The Kabuto of Takeda Shingen"
was made by Kiwata town in 1864. |
|
|
|
The annual grand festival of Karatsu Shrine,"Karatsu Kunchi"
starts with "Honden Sai" on 29th of October.
From 2 to 4 of November, the 14 Hikiyama floats and Hikikos in uniform
cruise around the towns of Karatsu.
On the night of 2nd, the Hikiyama floats with lanterns look so fantastic.
On the 3rd of November, all the floats go to Otabisho to pull Hikiyama
floats into Otabisho is called, "Hikikomi."
It's so powerful and energetic, so the place is filled with many people.
On the 4th day, the floats cruise around the towns of Karatsu.
To protect the floats of Karatsu Kunchi, they are fixed and repainted in
turn spending for ten months.
The nineth Hikiyama, "Takeda Shingen Kabuto" of Kiwata town is
under maintenance for the first time in 26 years.
This time, we report series of the process of fixing.
In addition, the Hikiyama Body Shop was made in "Nishi No Mon Yakata" this year.
The artisans were invited there.
Visitors can see it fixing without admission fee.

Vol.4 "Attaching cloths & Wave pattern restoration"
As of May 10, the progresses are attaching cloths and restoration of wave
designs.
To strengthen, hemp cloths are attached inside of the Kabuto and glued by lacquer.
Primarily, the wave designs have been restored thoroughly. Everytime the
wave designs were repainted, the ditches were filled with lacquer.
That caused disapearance of the designs.
Therefore, the special tool using copper wire are made to proceed the restoration.
The artisan said "We're thinking of the depths and widths of the ditches
because the gold foils come on them.
It is very intricate job."
He added responding the question about the public view of The Hikiyama
Body Shop,
"At first, I felt a little embarrassed, but now I feel encouraged
by many visitors.
Even many children come and greet to me.
I feel local people from adults to children love Hikiyama floats sincerely."
Another artisan said, "The communication with many people is fun and precious.
I definitely enjoy working here."
The next process will be undercoating.

Hello! Everyone!
"Hakata Dontaku Minato Matsuri" was held on May 3rd.
I, Karawan participated in the parade as Karatsu Dontaku Team.
This was our third time participation.
The centerpiece of the parade this year was the Karawan Balloon no matter
what!
It was 3 meter high and looked so powerful.
Thank you for cheering and waving from the street.

On May 4 and 5, "Marching Band Festa 2010 with Yuru Character"
was held at HUIS TEN BOSCH in Nagasaki prefecture.
It was extremely crowded during Golden Week.
The parade started with the marching band of Junior High & High School students.
Total 15 Yuru Characters from all over Japan joined the parade.
It was very successful. |

●Karawan in June Recommended event "Saga Shokuiku Festa 2010"
The 5th Dietary Education Promotion Meeting in Japan will be held at Saga
Culture Hall・Saga Prefectural Synthesis Gym on June 12(Sat),13(Sun).
It will be the first time in Kyushu.
It includes stage event, quiz tournament, cooking demonstration, character
show, lecture meeting, panel discussion, and more.
Karawan will come, too!
