～It's the season for sea-ears & yellow tail～
It takes for seven to eight years for sea-ears to grow
about man's hand size, so the harvest season is established
to prevent indiscriminate hunting and to protect sea-ears.
During three months from the end of December, they are allowed
to harvest sea-ears, so women divers started harvesting.
They know where they are due to tides and shape of rocks.
Yellow tail come into the fishing spot near Hoshika and Kashiwajima
in end of December every year to chase school of small fish.
It is the season of yellow tail, so they have fat slitely and shape very well.
They are unbelievably delicious. |

it's allowed to harvest sea-ears in Karatsu. |

■Karatsu kids cerebrate New Year with Hayashi.
"Shin Shyun Hayashi Hajime Shiki" |

| The annual prime festival of Karatsu Shrine "Karatsu Kunchi",
which is held 2nd to 4th of November every year. |
|
|
|
 |
"Karatsu Hikiyama Hayashi Hozonkai" is performing Hayashi music.
Mighty sound is vibrating the hall. |
|
|
|
During 2nd to 4th of November, the annual prime festival of Karatsu Shrine,
"Karatsu Kunchi" is held.
"Shin Shyun Hayashi Hajime Shiki" is part of important event
of "Karatsu Kunchi."
On that day, they go to the Karatsu Shrine to pray for the safety of the
festival.
After that, they go to Hikiyama Exhibition Hall right across the Shrine,
and "Karatsu Hikiyama Hayashi Hozonkai" perform the Hayashi music.
All the 14 Hikiyama floats are watching them and listening to the music.
Beautifully composed, mighty music sounds in the hall.
Regular visitors are able to take a look at the event.
Please stop by and join the "Hajime shiki."

On the Mega Tree, the colorful lights are on.
You can enjoy the change of rainbow colors controlled
by computer. |

Since Christmas Eve last year, the lighting up has been started
on the huge chimney. It's called "Mega Tree."
The light is shining on the 180 meter high canvas of chimney
from 17:30pm until 22:00pm.
The last day is February 28th (Sun). It became a reality with the cooperation
of Mega Tree owners.
If you apply for the owner (Fee is 1,000yen), owner certificate will be
issued,
and registered on the Mega Tree home page.
The owners will receive previledges everytime Mega Tree related events
take place.
At the "Karatsu Mega Tree Lighting Up Ceremony" on the Christmas
Eve,
Mega Tree was lit up at 18:00pm with the count down of approximately
500 visitors include Mega Tree Owners.
The ceremony included stage events, oden corner, street stalls & booth.
It was very successful.
This project was started to make huge landmark, which generate
happy & vigorous power in the cold winter "Karatsu."
Karatsu Mega Tree was lid up by lighting machine controlled
by computer located at the bottom of chimney.
You can enjoy watching rainbow colors of lights.

The test will be held at Yobuko morning market street.
(The location will be changed if it rains.)

Challengers solve questions in cheering voices of aunties at morning market.
Challengers who passed the test receive certificates and certified cards
and squid badges.
They received previledges everytime they show the cards to the member shops
(about 40 companies) in Karatsu area.
At the same time, "Squid Master Proficiency test", which is even
more difficult, will be held.
The people who passed "Squid Master" receive the certificates and cards.
In addition, their names will be added on the monument at "Ikoino
Hiroba" in the morning market.
Gradually it's getting popular.

～Gekidan(Troupe) Shiki Musical Performance in Karatsu～
"The Cat Who Wished To Be A Man"
|
|
The first performance of Gekidan Shiki Musical in Karatsu became
reality in September, 2004 because local people established
execution committee to let children know the excitement of musical.
This time is the 5th one, and the original story is
"The Cat Who Wished To Be A Man" written by American Author,
Lloyd Alexander.
English speaking cat, Lionel was changed to a man because he had talked
back to his owner who was a wizard.
Through his journey, Lionel realizes the warmth of men and the preciousness
of friendship.
It is heart warming, wonderful musical of Gekidan(troupe) Shiki.

■Karatsu Ware Story

The 10th -The New Year Special Edition-
2010 The Year Of Tiger ～The Karatsu Ware Tiger～
|
|
|
The Chinese Zodiac of this year is Tiger.
Due to Tiger Year, let us introduce you Karatsu Ware, "Tiger Doll."
Karatsu Ware is popular with bowls for tea ceremony or bottles of sake.
Moreover, many dolls and statues such as tigers & lions have been made.
Nakazato family members are very famous Karatsu Ware potters.
Especially, the 12th Nakazato Tarouemon was selected for the Human National
Treasure.
His father(The 11th) Nakazato Tenyu made this tiger doll, and the legends
of it still remain.
Tenyu became popular during Meiji era and was good at making dolls & statues.
This tiger doll looks like sleeping during day time, however; his eyes start shining at night.
One day, a smashed mouse was found by the tiger doll.
Then they found mouse hair all over on the paw of the tiger doll.
On another day, when Tenyu was putting the tiger to the alcove,
neighbor's cat came down and approached to the tiger doll.
Then it growled with his hair standing on end.

It must have been scarely for the cat.
He made several tiger dolls. Even now some of them are still kept valuably. |

～Introduction to the sightseeing spot which was selected for the Best 100～ |
The 15th Beautiful Historical Places Best 100
"The row of houses in Castle Town Karatsu, Niji No Matsubara, Rice
Paddy Field Of Warabino" |
"Historical Places" mean the areas which have historical buildings,
ruins and also surrounded by natural environment such as sierra, grove,
river.
They're the areas expressing composed beauty of both sides.
During October through December in 2006, they vote for the beautiful,
historical places where have been preserved in a good condition.
On January 31, 2007, Karatsu city was selected for The Beautiful Historical
Places Best 100
because of the reasons that Karatsu has beautiful castle, Niji No Matsubara,
rice paddy fields, ruins.
They have been preserved in good condition even now.
Total number of voters were 697.
Historical places are the origin of beautiful Japanese land proved by Japanese
history and tradition.
We'd like to protect them as national cultural assets.

The town of Karatsu still compose the same row of houses as castle town
under Karatsu Castle.
The divisions of the houses haven't changed much for 400 years.
In Jonai area, stone walls and moats still remain.
In merchant town areas, the same town names still exist such as Katana
machi(means sword town),
Gohuku machi(means kimono town), Komeya machi(means rice shop town),
Yaoya machi (means grocery store town).
You don't get lost even if you use the Karatsu map made in Edo era.
"The Stone Wall Path" still remains perfectly the same as the era it was made. It leads to the castle.
The Karatsu Castle was built in 1608.
It becomes over 400 years old.
Karatsu city started fixing the stone walls underneath the castle from 2008 to maintain
historical property & the symbol of the city.
It is 9 year plan (until 2016), and they are planning to fix 70% of the
stone walls around Honmaru.
The constraction range will be 1300㎡.

Tairou No Matsu
(means very old pine tree) |
|
|
|
Niji No Matsubara is the pine grove with about 100,000 black pine trees
and
is about 5km length, 1km width, 220ha.
Those pine trees were planted as windbreak with the order of the lord of
first Karatsu clan,
Terasawa Shimanokami. It's one of the three biggest pine groves in Japan
now.
Shimanokami made a order called "Nanamatsu no sei" to prevent
damaging pine trees and
to protect them. It was selected for The National Natural Monument in 1926.
In 1955, it was selected for The Special Natural Monument.
Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove protects our lives as windbreak and household
fuel for 400 years,
however, many pine trees are dying because of harmful insects and ecological
change.
They say the reason why is because they don't sweep pine needles and corns
so often like before any more, and the ecosystem of the grove has changed.
In the end of 2009, there was a tragedy. The oldest pine tree which is
400 years old,
"Tairou no Matsu" died of Matsukui bugs and was cut down on December 16th, 2009.
It was 19 meter high, 1.2 meter diameter, 4.2 meter round.
It was located in the middle of the grove by prefectural highway.
Only the stump sadly remains there now.
Since 1966, the activity to protect Niji No Matsubara has started by Karatsu
city,
civil organizations, and Saga Prefecture.
It is our subject how to protect the grove as national cultural asset
for our future generation.

|
1050 rice paddy fields spread around Hachimandake (mountain).
Since the age of civil wars until 1945, farmers had gradually piled up
stones and
made rice paddy fields one by one. In1999, it was selected for the one
of
" Rice Paddy Field Best 100 of Japan."
In 2008, it was selected for "National Important Cultural Scenery."
The stone walls are 8.5 meter high and the highest in Japan.
Local farmers have taken care of them very well to protect beautiful scenery
of rice paddy fields. The view from Oohira observatory is the best place
to view the rice paddy fields of Warabino. It's possible to get there by
car or large bus.
They have some events such as walking in flower season, sowing and so on
at the rice paddy fields.
They are located 150～420 meter above the sea, so the rice plants observe
pure mountain water.
That's why their brand rice, "Warabino" is high quarity, safe,
and delicious.

Present row of houses in Karatsu was made when Toyotomi Hideyoshi had ordered
Mr. Terasawa Shimanokami to be the lord of first Karatsu Clan.
Even now the same town and street names have been used.
Let us introduce these names and also new ones, which were made due to
road maintenance.

Kyou machi and other towns cross perpendicularly.
Until the beginning of Meiji era, Kyou machi was the only town
leading to "Fudanotsuji Bridge" which was the only bridge
to connect inner and outer towns.
Therefore, Kyoumachi was very prosperous

in this Kyoumachi arcade.
According to the record, "Hinoya Tsuneyasu Kyuemon",
who had donated red copper Torii to Dazaihu Tenmangu in 1781,
owned most of the property of this town.
He made a big fortune by whailing just like Mr. Nakao Jinroku in Yobuko.
In August, 1812, Mr. Inou Tadataka, who made the first map of
entire Japan, recorded that "There is the powerful landlord
called Hinoya Tsuneyasu Kyuemon" on his diary.
The record also said, "Daikonya (The trade mark of the Inn)
Nagasaki branch" used to exist here around 1840's.
The merchants in the end of Edo era were Itoya Kusaba family,
Hirataya Kusaba family, Hiranoya Kusuriya Funakoshi family,
Okamaya Iwashita family.
For Karatsu Kunchi, the 12th Hikiyama, Tamatorijishi was dedicated
to Karatsu Shrine from this town in 1875.
This hikiyama was repainted with lacquer of original color in 2008.
They do it every 25 years.
In addition, the stone statue of Tamatorijishi is located
in the middle of this town. |
