Experience leather craft (pen case workshop)
Komatsuya is specialty leather craft store selling traditional Japanese school bags, alongside various bags, purses, and other leather accessories.
Miki-san, Komatsuya’s owner, has an extensive knowledge of leather craft and makes various items for the shop.
Would you like to make your original, one of a kind leather accessory, decorated with decorations unique to Karatsu and Japan?
Here we’ll introduce the main steps:
STEP 1
Choose your leather and decorations
Choose your favorite color leather, and decorations for your pen case.
STEP 2
Fix decorations
Make holes in the leather with the hammer and tools, fix the decorations in place.
STEP 3
Form the shape of the pen case
Apply a special bond to the outer periphery. Bend the leather in half, and make a pen case shape with hammer.
STEP 4
Make the holes for the seam
Make straight and curved holes on the outer edge.
STEP 5
Sew with hemp yarn
Pass a threaded needle through the opend holes, sewing along the seam.
STEP 6
Finishing off
After sewing, remove any leather fuzz with sandpaper and a processing agent. Sand the leather as much as needed to make your pen case beautiful.
STEP 7
Completion
After repeating Step 6 many times you will have your unique and special pen case.
STEP 8
Carve your favorite words or name
If you want, you can carve your name or a favorite word onto the pen case with a leather pen.
